Whippets aren’t built like most dogs. Their slim necks and narrow heads mean a flat collar can slip off too easily or put pressure on their throat. A Whippet collar is wider at the front so that pressure is evenly distributed, and tapers to a narrower strap that sits neatly behind the ears. This not only prevents slipping but also makes the collar more comfortable for daily wear. You can read more in our post, Why Whippets Need Special Collars.

Different collars work best for different needs. Here are the styles Whippet owners often choose:
Leather Whippet Collars – Classic tapered collars that are strong, stylish and long lasting. (See also Leather vs Fabric: What’s Best for Your Whippet’s Collar?)
Martingale Collars – A popular choice for Whippets that back out of collars, as the loop gently tightens when needed and relaxes when the lead slackens. We’ve explored this more in Are Martingale Collars Good for Whippets?.
House Collars – Lightweight collars that hold an ID tag when your Whippet is at home or resting. If you’re unsure when to use one, take a look at House Collars vs Walking Collars for Whippets: What’s the Difference?.
You can also personalise your collar by choosing from over 2 dozen leather colours, or add Swarovski crystals if you’d like a little extra sparkle.
Most adult Whippets wear a collar that measures between 10 and 14 inches. The best way to check your dog’s size is to measure the narrowest part of their neck, just behind the ears and under the chin. This position reduces the chance of a collar slipping off while keeping it comfortable. For a step by step guide, see How to Measure Your Whippet for a Leather Collar.
Whippet puppies benefit from lightweight collars that are narrower and soft against the skin. Introducing the tapered shape early helps them get used to the style they’ll continue wearing as adults. Puppies can usually start wearing collars from around eight weeks, provided you choose a design that is gentle and sized appropriately. Our Whippet puppy collars come in the same wide choice of colours as the adult range, so you can find one that suits your pup right from the start. A wide tapered collar or martingale is often the most practical choice for Whippets, as it supports the neck evenly and helps prevent slipping. Collars are comfortable for daily use and make it easy to carry identification on a tag. Some owners do choose to use harnesses, particularly if their Whippet tends to wriggle free, but many prefer the simplicity of a well-fitted collar. You can also use both together, with the harness taking the lead and the collar holding your dog’s ID tag.
We craft every Whippet collar to order in our Northumberland workshop. We use stainless steel hardware and rot-proof stitching for strength, and we combine these with Italian leather that softens beautifully over time. Many owners tell us their collars last for years without losing their colour or shape. You can see more feedback from real owners in What Real Whippet Owners Say About Petiquette Collars.
Why do Whippets need special collars?
Whippets need collars that are wider and tapered because their necks are slimmer than their heads. A normal flat collar can slip off too easily or put pressure on the wrong areas, which is uncomfortable and unsafe. The wide front of a Whippet collar spreads the contact more evenly, while the taper behind the ears helps the collar sit securely without digging in. This shape makes them more comfortable for everyday wear and reduces the risk of accidents on walks.
Do Whippets need martingale collars?
Martingale collars are often recommended for Whippets because they help prevent slipping. The loop gently tightens if your dog tries to reverse out of the collar and relaxes again when the lead is slack. Not all Whippets require one, but for nervous dogs or those prone to backing out, a martingale is a reliable and comfortable option. You can learn more in Are Martingale Collars Good for Whippets?.
How tight should a Whippet collar be?
A Whippet collar should fit so that it touches the coat but doesn’t restrict movement. If it’s too loose, it can slip over your Whippet’s narrow head, especially if they pull backwards. If it’s too tight, it can rub the skin or cause pressure points on their slim neck. The best fit is one where you can slide a finger comfortably between the collar and the coat, with the buckle usually fastening on the middle hole. This gives you room to adjust if your Whippet’s weight changes.
Can Whippets wear normal collars?
Flat collars are not ideal for Whippets as walking collars because their slim necks and narrow heads make it easy for these collars to slip off. A wide, tapered collar or martingale is much safer and more comfortable for walks. That said, flat collars can still be suitable as house collars if they’re lightweight and used only to hold an ID tag when your Whippet is indoors. How do I choose the right size collar for my Whippet?
Most Whippets have a neck size of between 10 and 14 inches, but we’d always recommend measuring your dog’s neck to make sure the collar fits properly. Measure just behind the ears and under the chin, which is the narrowest part of the neck. For example, our 11"–13" size will fit a Whippet whose neck measures between 11 and 13 inches. If your Whippet measures in between our standard sizes, we can make a custom size just for them.
