Don’t measure the total length of an existing collar though (from end to end) as this will result in ordering an incorrect size.
This collar would be a size 12″ – 14″ (30.5cm – 35.5cm) and will fit a dog whose neck is within those measurements.
How to Measure your dog's neck for a collar
How to measure your dog’s neck for a leather dog collar
There are a couple of ways to measure your dog for a leather dog collar from Petiquette Collars. The most important thing to remember though is NOT TO MEASURE THE TOTAL LENGTH OF AN EXISTING COLLAR.
The first method is to measure the circumference of your dog’s neck using a soft tape measure or piece of string.
- Wrap a soft tape measure or piece of string around the middle of the neck so that it is fairly snug against the fur. Don’t put any fingers underneath the tape measure.
- This measurement is your dog’s neck size.
- Take a look at our size chart and select a collar size where the neck measurement you have taken sits comfortably within.
- For example, a collar with the a size range of 9″-11″ can be adjusted to fit dog’s with necks of sizes from 9″ up to 11″. If your dog has a neck measurement of 10″, you would choose this size.
- DO NOT MEASURE THE TOTAL LENGTH OF A COLLAR, IT WILL RESULT IN YOU RECEIVING THE WRONG SIZE FOR YOUR DOG.
If you feel your dog has a neck measurement that is in between sizes and you’re unsure which would be the best fit, please get in touch and we’ll be able to advise.
How to measure an existing collar
- Lay your existing collar flat and measure from the end of the leather where the probg of the buckle sticks out to the hole that you use.
- Make a note of this measurement. Let’s say for example the measurement is 13″.
- Take a look at our collar size range chart and choose a size range where the measurement you have taken falls as close to the middle of the range as possible. So, in the example above, you would choose a 12″-14″ collar size as the 13″ neck measurement falls in the middle.
If you’re at all unsure, please do get in touch. We’d rather you receive the perfect fit for your dog first time.

Ensuring the Perfect Fit For Your Sighthound’s Collar
-
If you have a sighthound such as an Italian Greyhound, Whippet, lurcher, saluki or Greyhound (or one of the many other breeds!), rather than measuring around the middle of the neck, wrap the tape measure so that it is fairly snug, just behind the ears and under the chin at the top of the neck.
-
As with our classic collars would recommend that you choose the collar size where the smallest hole is as close to the neck measurement as possible.

-
Select this size from the drop down menu. For a slip on house collar, choose the largest measurement.
The total length of the collar from end to end (including hardware) will measure the size selected.
