How to Measure Your Greyhound or Lurcher for a Collar That Fits Perfectly

Choosing the right size collar for your Greyhound or Lurcher starts with a proper measurement—and it’s easier than you might think. Here’s a quick guide to help you get it right the first time.

Measuring Your Greyhound or Lurcher’s Neck

Use a soft tape measure and follow these steps:

  1. Place the tape around the top of your dog’s neck—just behind the ears and under the chin.
  2. Keep the tape fairly snug, but not tight.
  3. Note down the measurement in inches or centimetres.

This is the narrowest part of your sighthound’s head, so by measuring this point, you reduce the risk of your dog being able to back out of the collar.

Tip: Choose a size where your dog’s neck measurement is closest to the smallest hole in the size range. This gives you room to adjust slightly if needed.

Measuring an Existing Collar

Already have a collar that fits your dog well? Lay it flat and measure from the end of the leather by the buckle (where the metal prong sticks out) to the hole you use most often.

For example, if the measurement is 15″, the best option would be a 14″–16″ collar size—where the hole you use sits close to the middle of the range.

The most important thing to note when measuring an existing collar though is DO NOT MEASURE THE TOTAL LENGTH OF THE COLLAR.  You need to measure from the buckle end of the collar to the hole that you use.
