Types of Leather Dog Collars
- Rolled leather collars are ideal if your dog has a long or silky coat, a rolled collar is worth considering. The rounded leather sits under the fur rather than pushing against it, which means less matting around the neck and no tell-tale flattened patch where a collar has been sitting all day. Particularly good for Spaniels, Retrievers, and anything that needs regular grooming.
- Leather dog collars – the everyday workhorse. A well-made leather collar from Petiquette looks smart, lasts for years, and comes in 28 colours, so there's no reason to settle for plain black unless that's genuinely what you want. This is what most dogs wear most of the time, and for good reason.
- Vegetable-tanned leather collars are made using traditional tanning methods rather than chemicals, so the leather develops a natural patina over time. The colour deepens, the leather takes on marks and tones from daily wear, and after a few years it looks nothing like it did out of the box. In a good way. It is firmer than our Italian calf leather to start with, but we line every veg tan collar with soft rounded calf leather, so it's comfortable from day one.
- Puppy collars are lightweight and narrow, made for necks that are still growing. Same Italian calf leather as our adult collars, just scaled down to fit properly from the start rather than swamping a small dog in something designed for a Labrador.
- Half-check collars are part leather, part chain loop. The chain section tightens slightly under pressure, which gives you a moment of feedback without fully closing like a choke chain. They're useful for dogs that have quietly figured out they can reverse out of a standard collar on the lead. Some dogs discover this skill remarkably fast once they realise it works.

Leather can handle rain showers and the occasional swim, but it’s best to take the collar off afterwards and let it dry naturally. Leaving a damp collar on for hours can cause smells or encourage mould. A quick wipe and some leather balm will keep it supple. Are leather dog collars better than nylon?
It depends what you're after, but for most dogs leather wins on almost every count that matters long term. Nylon is cheaper upfront and dries faster after a swim, but it frays at the edges, the hardware tends to rust, and after a year of daily use it usually looks like it's had a year of daily use. Leather does the opposite. It softens and improves with wear, holds its shape, and with a bit of basic care will outlast several nylon collars. The stitching and hardware matter too. Our collars use rot-proof thread and stainless steel fittings, so there's no weak point waiting to fail. If your dog destroys everything they own within weeks, nylon might be the pragmatic call. But for most dogs, a good leather collar is simply the last collar you'll need to buy for a very long time.
