A leather collar is comfortable, long-lasting and looks smart on every breed. Unlike nylon, which frays with wear, leather moulds to your dog’s neck and softens beautifully over time.
We use a vegetable-tanned leather core to stop collars from stretching, Italian calf leather for a smooth finish, and rot-proof stitching with stainless steel fittings to keep every collar strong for daily use.

The right collar depends not just on size, but also on breed. Small dogs like Dachshunds or Chihuahuas are more comfortable in lightweight, narrower collars, while medium breeds such as Cockapoos or Cocker Spaniels suit classic flat leather styles.
Larger dogs like Labradors often benefit from wider collars that spread pressure evenly across the neck. Rolled collars are a good option for long-coated breeds such as Retrievers, while half-check collars can help with dogs that sometimes back out of ordinary collars.
For detailed recommendations, see our guide: The Ultimate Guide to Dog Collars by Breed. It covers a wide range of popular breeds with practical advice on sizing and choosing the most suitable style.
Because our leather dog collars include different styles, there isn’t one single sizing method that works for every collar. Flat dog collars, martingale collars, and half check collars all sit slightly differently on the neck, so each uses its own size guide.
To make sure you get the best fit, please use the size guide that matches the style of collar you’re choosing:

Half check collars
Half check collars have a chain loop which tightens under pressure. Follow our Half Check Collar Size Guide to ensure you get the perfect fit.

Yes. Good leather softens with use and gently moulds to the shape of your dog’s neck, which makes it more comfortable over time than many synthetic materials. We use Italian calf leather with rounded edges to prevent rubbing, so the collar sits comfortably on both short and long coats. For extra comfort, some designs are padded or rolled to suit different coat types.
Leather can handle rain showers and the occasional swim, but it’s best to take the collar off afterwards and let it dry naturally. Leaving a damp collar on for hours can cause smells or encourage mould. A quick wipe and some leather balm will keep it supple. If your dog swims in the sea, rinsing the salt off with a damp cloth helps protect the leather.
Cleaning a leather dog collar is simple. For everyday dirt, just wipe the surface with a damp cloth or sponge. For more stubborn marks, a tiny drop of mild washing-up liquid on the sponge will help lift the dirt, then wipe away any soap with clean water. Always let the collar dry naturally, away from direct heat or sunlight. For full step-by-step care tips, see our guide: How to Clean a Leather Dog Collar.
With the right care, a handmade leather collar will often last for years. We build ours around a vegetable-tanned leather core, use stainless steel hardware that won’t rust, and stitch with rot-proof thread. Wiping the collar clean after walks and letting it dry naturally are usually all that’s needed to keep it in good condition. Many of our customers use the same collar daily for years before replacing it.
Start by measuring your dog’s neck with a soft tape measure held snug against the coat. Pick a collar where that measurement is close to the smallest hole in the size range, which leaves you room to adjust. The width of the collar increases with size so that small breeds wear narrower styles while larger dogs have collars that give more support. Our dog collar size guide has step-by-step instructions.
Like any natural material, leather can pick up odours if it’s left damp for long periods, but regular care keeps it fresh. Wiping the collar clean and letting it dry naturally after wet walks will usually prevent smells. If it does pick up a stronger odour, a quick clean with mild soap and a touch of leather balm brings it back. For detailed steps, see our cleaning guide.
It depends what you're after, but for most dogs leather wins on almost every count that matters long term. Nylon is cheaper upfront and dries faster after a swim, but it frays at the edges, the hardware tends to rust, and after a year of daily use it usually looks like it's had a year of daily use. Leather does the opposite. It softens and improves with wear, holds its shape, and with a bit of basic care will outlast several nylon collars. The stitching and hardware matter too. Our collars use rot-proof thread and stainless steel fittings, so there's no weak point waiting to fail. If your dog destroys everything they own within weeks, nylon might be the pragmatic call. But for most dogs, a good leather collar is simply the last collar you'll need to buy for a very long time.
Yes, every single one. Our collars are handmade in our workshop in Northumberland by Geoff, who started Petiquette in 2009 because he couldn't find a decent leather collar for his own dog and decided to learn how to make one himself. We use soft Italian calf leather, stainless steel hardware, and rot-proof stitching throughout. Nothing is outsourced, nothing comes flat-packed from a warehouse. If you order a collar from us, a person made it, by hand, in the North East of England.
